The world’s greatest creative thinking has often come from those who have faced the toughest challenges. Adversity fuels innovation, yet today, we are overlooking an entire population of potential creators—incarcerated and marginalized individuals whose perspectives, ideas, and talents remain untapped. Their absence isn’t just a loss for them; it’s a loss for all of us.
After more than two decades in design—teaching, mentoring, and leading his agency, Re/mark—Rusty saw firsthand how creative education could transform lives. But he also saw who was missing from the conversation. He knew creativity wasn’t just an outlet for incarcerated individuals; it was a means of self-expression, healing, and opportunity. More importantly, their perspectives have the power to enrich the creative world in ways no one had considered. Inspired by organizations that elevate overlooked talent, Rusty knew it was time to build something that could make a real impact.
That vision took shape when Steph joined the mission. While Rusty saw the need, Steph created the structure to make it a reality. With experience in adult education, a keen eye for non-profit management, and a Master’s degree in Education and Social Change, she has the skills to turn ideas into action. Together, they launched Re/create—a nonprofit dedicated to unlocking the creative potential of those who have been left out for too long. With the support of a committed and passionate Board of Directors, they are proving that when more voices are heard, when more people create, we all benefit.
